THE CRUNCH

AMD's upcoming EPYC "Verano" processors look set to run on a new socket called SB1, if a listing from server cooler maker Dynatron is anything to go by. The company's website now says its cooling solutions support "AMD EPYC Verano on Socket SB1", and it has a product page for a 4U active cooler labelled "SB1-4U-ACTIVE (TBD)". AMD itself has not yet revealed the socket name for Verano, so this remains an unofficial pointer rather than confirmation.

The details come with caveats: the cooler's maximum power rating is still marked TBD, and its dimensions match Dynatron's existing J26 cooler for SP7, so the listed specs may simply be placeholders. The "B" in SB1 could point to a BGA package, meaning a chip soldered directly to the board rather than seated in a socket, but that is a guess based on the name alone and nothing official.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Verano, the codename for the EPYC 9006 LP, is planned for launch in the second half of 2027, so an official socket announcement from AMD should settle the question before then.
