THE CRUNCH
Apple is rolling out a new feature called Reference Image for the iPhone 18 Pro that aims to prove photos have not been manipulated by AI. The system is said to use the device’s camera sensor to sign every pixel it captures, creating a digital record of the original shot.
The feature is designed to help users verify that an image has not been altered, including by generative AI tools. Apple Reference Image will be available with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup later this month, according to reporting.
The technology reportedly works by having the camera sensor embed a unique signature into every pixel of the image. This process is intended to create a tamper-evident record that can be checked against the original capture.
