THE CRUNCH

CD Projekt Red has rolled out hotfix 5.01b for The Witcher 3 Remastered on PS5 and PS5 Pro, promising only "various stability improvements to help ensure a more reliable experience". That, it seems, is the entire patch note list. The update nonetheless worried players still waiting for the promised Switch 2 version, prompting the studio to reassure them on X: "We're working on getting the Nintendo Switch 2 patch to all users as soon as possible."

The Switch 2 patch is said to improve the game's visual "clarity and sharpness". It follows a busy fortnight for the studio since the Remastered edition launched, a free update released 11 years after the original game that overhauls visuals, animations, skills and some gameplay. Not everyone is delighted: some players felt the remaster made the game too bright, an aspect already addressed in patches since release.

Meanwhile, Digital Foundry has published a full performance appraisal of the remaster on PC with optimised settings suggestions, and is tracking changes to the game's path tracing, which it notes is currently enormously system-heavy. The remaster also raises the game's visual standards ahead of the Songs of the Past expansion due next year, which brings a new region, dozens of hours of gameplay and a story centred on Geralt's musical pal Dandelion and his family.
