THE CRUNCH

Gigabyte has released BIOS updates that prepare its entire Intel B760 and H610 motherboard lineup for new LGA 1700 processors it says are expected to launch in early 2027. The firmware covers both DDR4 and DDR5 variants of those boards, so owners would only need to flash the update and drop in a new CPU when it arrives, without replacing their motherboard.

Gigabyte's press release does not name the processors, and Intel has not announced anything new for the socket. The timing, however, lines up with reports that Intel is readying a third refresh of its Raptor Lake architecture, informally dubbed Raptor Lake Next, for LGA 1700 in 2027. TechPowerUp calls the BIOS the closest thing to a confirmation of new DDR4-compatible Intel processors ahead of any official announcement, noting that some firmware was rolling out quietly before the press release, with a late-September changelog listing "preparation for upcoming processor support."

The DDR4 angle matters because rising memory prices have pushed up the cost of building or upgrading a PC, and continued DDR4 support would let budget builders reuse existing memory and boards. It also matches what Intel's Robert Hallock, vice president and general manager of the enthusiast channel business, told Tom's Hardware Premium in August: "LGA 1700 is still a good socket. Lots of people are still interested in DDR4, so we'll keep offering, and you'll see pricing smooth out over time."

Two gaps remain. The announcement omits Gigabyte's Z690, Z790 and B660 boards, which share the same socket, with no word on whether they will follow. And no SKUs, specifications or pricing have been disclosed. Separately, leaked specifications shared by the tipster Jaykihn suggest Raptor Lake Next could adopt Core 200 branding, from a four-core Core 3 up to a 20-core Core 7, though that remains unconfirmed speculation.
