THE CRUNCH

HP's Omen 35L gaming desktop has dropped from $4,999.99 to $2,799.99, a $2,200 discount that Tom's Hardware flags as unusually good given current component prices. The configuration pairs AMD's Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor with Nvidia's GeForce RTX 5080, 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory and a 2TB SSD.

The rest of the spec list is solid for a prebuilt at this level: a 1,000-watt fully modular 80-Plus Gold power supply, Wi-Fi 7 and a 240mm all-in-one liquid cooler for the CPU. The 35-litre chassis is compact enough for many desks but can also sit on the floor.

The pricing maths is what makes the deal stand out. Tom's Hardware notes the RTX 5080 on its own typically sells for between $1,600 and $2,000 right now, and that memory and GPU prices are generally hard to find at good prices at the moment. On paper, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is among the fastest gaming CPUs available and the RTX 5080 is the fastest gaming card short of an RTX 5090.

One caveat: Tom's Hardware has not reviewed this exact model, though it notes HP typically uses standardised parts, which should make later upgrades straightforward. Anyone tempted would need to buy the system rather than build one, which is the trade-off the price is compensating for.
