THE CRUNCH

A last-minute need for a workbench keyboard led Tom's Hardware to buy the Epomaker x Aula F75 Pro blind for $65, filtered only by same-day Amazon delivery, and the gamble paid off. The reviewer says its Leobog Reaper switches are the nicest they have ever felt, with no wobble or grit, and that the five-layer acoustic dampening stack, including a cotton layer and a silicone foundation, makes it the best-sounding board they own. The switches are linear with a light 36gf initial force, 45g actuation force and 55gf bottom-out force, which the reviewer, who has RSI-affected wrists, values for reducing strain.

The feature list reads like custom keyboard DNA: dual-tone PBT keycaps with side legends, a volume knob that doubles as a mute button, hot-swap support for the switches, customisable RGB lighting, and wired, 2.4GHz and Bluetooth connectivity with multiple pairing profiles. Most functions work without installing the optional utility, though the reviewer recommends keeping the printed cheat card for Fn combos. Pre-lubed switches, tri-mode connectivity and sound dampening are also features promoted on premium boards, such as Turtle Beach's Vulcan II XP Air announced in September, yet here they arrive at a $65 price point.

Not everything is premium. The plastic outer shell feels cut-rate compared with milled aluminium or other exotic materials, and the reviewer would trade the volume knob on the 75% layout for a dedicated Home key. Still, they argue you type on the keys rather than the shell, and on the MonkeyType test they recorded 107 wpm with 99% accuracy, slightly faster than average on this board. Against boards from big brands that often cost hundreds, they plan to keep the extra cash.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

The reviewer notes the board may cost even less during Amazon's current Prime Big Deal Days event.
