THE CRUNCH
Publisher Deck13 Spotlight and developers Nostalgic Realms and Whiskeybarrel Studios have announced Lair of the Leviathan, an old school-inspired open-world RPG coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch and PC via Steam and GOG in 2027.
The game is set in Ormande, a wild frontier far from an imperial capital, where players answer a bounty to vanquish the Leviathan or, the announcement suggests, simply write their own adventure instead. Exploration is deliberately open, with the story not meant to dictate your path, though some dungeons are flagged as too dangerous for an underprepared party.
Combat is turn-based and tactical, with the placement of each hero in the party said to matter to the outcome of battles. Enemies range from goblins and slimes to spectral knights and five-headed hydras, found in dungeons, mountains, deserts and even a magical painting. Visually it uses pixel art, paired with what the developers describe as modern quality of life features that were technically impossible in the past.
