THE CRUNCH
Shelly has launched the Presence Gen4, an $84.99 sensor that uses mmWave radar, rather than a camera, to detect the presence, motion and activities of people and pets. It is available today through Shelly's online store, with Amazon and Best Buy expected to follow soon.
The sensor can monitor spaces up to 650 square feet with a 140-degree horizontal field of view, either perched on a shelf using its built-in stand or wall-mounted. Installation requires access to a power source for its USB-C cable, so this is not a battery-powered option.
Up to 10 detection zones can be customised independently, so a lamp can switch on only when someone sits at a desk, or a home theatre only when someone takes the sofa. Sensitivity can be adjusted to ignore low objects, so a robovac does not trigger automations, and pets can be included or excluded.
It integrates with Google Home, Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and Home Assistant, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee and Matter support. Automations can turn lights, heating, cooling or music on when someone enters a space and off when they leave to conserve power. The launch follows Shelly's $50 subscription-free security camera last month.
