THE CRUNCH

Tesla is widening its Powershare Home Backup feature to some Model 3 and Model Y owners, letting them draw on the car's battery to keep the lights on during a power outage. The feature previously worked only with the Cybertruck, and it still requires owning a Tesla Powerwall 3 at home.

Tesla says the setup can stretch home backup power to more than two days. Support for the older Powerwall 2 and Powerwall Plus is described as "coming soon", so owners of those units will need to wait.

Tesla is not the first carmaker here: Kia and GM offer vehicle-to-home power on some models, and Nissan's Leaf could feed power back to the grid years ago. What Tesla adds is tying the capability to its own home battery ecosystem.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Owners with Powerwall 2 or Powerwall Plus units should watch for Tesla's promised support, which the company says is coming soon.
