THE CRUNCH

A Lagos-based makeup artist has built a small business around ChatGPT, using the free chatbot as a hiring manager, social media strategist and pricing calculator. The entrepreneur says the AI contributes roughly 5% to her growth without any financial cost.

Ogunmuyiwa, who runs a bridal makeup service, used ChatGPT to draft a job description and interview questions when she hired her first assistant. The bot also helps her write captions and hashtags for Instagram, acting as a social media manager. She also uses it to calculate profit margins when restocking beauty products, saving hours of manual work.

The entrepreneur relies on the free tier of the service, saying she has invested time but not money. She also uses Anthropic’s Claude for some tasks but prefers ChatGPT. The profile is part of a wider look at how workers in Asia and Africa are using AI to solve local problems and expand what one person can accomplish.

Why It Matters: This case shows how low-cost AI tools are enabling small businesses in regions with limited formal support to scale operations. It highlights a shift from Silicon Valley hype to practical, bootstrapped use of AI in everyday work.
