THE CRUNCH

A Windows 11 update is fixing an issue that caused mouse input to stutter in some games. Microsoft rolled the change into its latest security patch, KB5127648, and it can be picked up through Windows Update. The patch notes are sparse, stating only that "this update fixes an issue that could cause mouse input to stutter in some games," with no explanation of the root cause or how widespread it was.

That lack of detail leaves some open questions. It is not clear how prevalent this particular cause of stuttering was or how long it has been affecting players, and past reports of Windows updates causing mouse stuttering have generally not produced firm evidence that the operating system was to blame.

Mouse stuttering in games can also stem from many other sources, including driver or USB handshaking problems and sensor faults. If swapping mice has not helped, though, this patch is worth trying. The update was reportedly available on a Windows 11 26H2 machine after manually checking for updates.
