THE CRUNCH

Xbox has appointed Maria Angelidou-Smith, most recently chief product officer at Reddit, as CEO of Mojang and Minecraft. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the hire in a staff memo on October 8, saying Angelidou-Smith starts on October 19 and reports directly to her.

She replaces Kayleen Walters, who had run Mojang since February 2025 and now moves to lead XP, the new Xbox division covering film, TV, merchandise and live experiences. Xbox says Minecraft sales grew from 350 million copies to more than 425 million during Walters' tenure.

Angelidou-Smith's background is in community products rather than game studios: the memo says she spent nearly a decade at Meta leading Facebook Groups, Events, Creators, Search, Profile and Monetization, later led product and technology at HR software firm Personio, and joined Reddit in November 2025. Sharma wrote that Xbox sought someone who has "built products for communities at enormous scale" and understands how creators, technology and monetisation fit together, noting Mojang already has an exceptional game development team. Angelidou-Smith's first priority, apparently, is learning from the teams and the community.
