THE CRUNCH

Anbernic has shown off the RG DDS, an upcoming dual-screen handheld whose design and display dimensions closely mimic the Nintendo 3DS, minus the glasses-free 3D effect. A new video shows the device playing 3DS, Xbox and PS3 games through emulation.

The RG DDS, short for "Dream Dual Screen," follows Anbernic's RG DS and RG DS Plus, which were built as modern replacements for the original Nintendo DS. The new model has a faster processor and displays with aspect ratios matched to the 3DS: a 4.7-inch 1,200x720 top screen and a 4-inch 960x720 bottom display, both with triple the resolution of the 3DS's screens so emulated games scale up cleanly. It runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chipset with a 6,000mAh battery, built-in vibration feedback and an extendable stylus stashed inside.

The layout stays faithful to the 3DS, with an extra analog thumbstick on the lower right for games that need two, and the small button beside the New 3DS touchscreen carried over, though it now acts as a shortcut for AI features Anbernic has yet to reveal. Dual-screen handhelds are not new to the market, as Ayaneo has made them for a few years, but Anbernic only recently entered the space.

Pricing and full performance details are still unknown. For context, Anbernic's existing RG DS and DS Plus start at under $100, while the competing Ayaneo Pocket DS currently starts at $579, so where the RG DDS lands between them will say a lot about its ambitions.
