THE CRUNCH
Kotaro Uchikoshi, the writer and director behind the Zero Escape trilogy and AI: The Somnium Files, has announced a new studio called CRASH KEYS, headquartered in Shibuya, Tokyo. The reveal came earlier than planned because the game the team had worked on for about a year and a half was suddenly cancelled, and the studio is now openly seeking investment partners and work.
The studio was actually founded in March 2025, but Uchikoshi had intended to announce it alongside its first game in 2027. The cancellation forced his hand. In his words, he "lost my job overnight", and he is now asking for work requests, investment proposals or, in his typically offbeat phrasing, anything that stops the company from crashing "into a million pieces".
In a follow-up, Uchikoshi suggested the cancellation was partly down to "major changes in the game development landscape", pointing to generative AI. He argued that AI tools have made it possible to build games far more cheaply, squeezing mid-sized developers, and that "not using AI" could also cost creators their jobs. He was careful to add that budget was not the direct cause of the cancellation, only that further cost-cutting might have changed the outcome.
He also clarified that he remains part of Too Kyo Games, the studio he co-founded with Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka, and that the pair have not fallen out. CRASH KEYS lists two other staff: writer Akira Mine, who worked on The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy and the upcoming Danganronpa 2x2, and Muri Sasaki, who contributed to Zero Escape and AI: The Somnium Files. Fans have noted the studio shares its name with a key organisation in the Zero Escape trilogy.
