THE CRUNCH

Publisher 11 bit studios and developer Team Instant Defeat have announced Volatiles, a fast-paced, top-down roguelike action game coming to PC via Steam, with no release date announced.

The premise is suitably strange: each run takes place inside the mind of an amnesiac locked in a covert lab, where an alien invasion unfolds as visions of battlefields that should not exist.

The hook is that you build the map yourself. Every run starts with a single tile and grows as you fight through alien hordes, gather experience and level up. New tiles bring weapons, upgrades, healing, tools, defences and risky synergies, and tile placement is described as a vital part of any build.

Death sends you back to a water-filled tank with knowledge carried into the next attempt, roguelike style. The studio also teases strangers watching from outside the nightmare while whatever is growing in your mind learns to take control.
