THE CRUNCH

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi says keeping the Remake trilogy's story faithful to the original has been a challenge. In an interview with Edge magazine, he said the core plot was planned when development began and has not been altered based on reactions to the first two games. He admitted ending the trilogy well "wasn't easy", but said he was determined not to turn the game into his "own personal fan project".

Speaking to Edge magazine, Hamaguchi said the trilogy's overall plot structure was planned when development first began, with details added as each new game started. "We haven't altered the core of the story based on reactions at any given time," he explained, adding that the team had built up each title without wavering from the central theme set at the very start of the Remake series.

Asked whether the additions, including new characters and alternate timelines, made it hard to end the trilogy in a satisfying way, Hamaguchi conceded that "it wasn't easy". He said it was important to make sure the story ended appropriately despite the temptation to change things more, and that he felt it was "absolutely essential to avoid turning a masterpiece like Final Fantasy 7 into something that felt like my own personal fan project".
