THE CRUNCH
A modder has ported Xemu, a popular original Xbox emulator, to jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles. Reddit user u/Yzenxam posted a video showing the port, dubbed XPSemu, running Forza Motorsport, Halo 2 and Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex. The modder behind the port, ZiZc3, says XPSemu is Xemu and nothing different, with the work limited to letting it open on the PS5 as an application.
The port, named XPSemu, is available on the modder's GitHub page. According to the modder, it is simply Xemu repackaged to open on the PS5 as an application. Xemu translates the original Xbox CPU to the PS5 CPU in real time using QEMU's TCG JIT, and it renders through a Vulkan driver, relying on the PS5_Vulkan project to talk to the console's AMD GPU via the open-source RADV driver.
ZiZc3 has added extras on top of the port, including a controller-friendly dashboard, per-game settings, cover art, play time tracking, game patches, a performance overlay, a per-game log and CPU optimisations aimed at the PS5's Zen 2 processor. Performance is mixed, though. The developer reports that the emulated Xbox CPU is the bottleneck, running at 85 to 97 percent load while the PS5 GPU sits mostly idle, so raising the resolution multiplier to 3-4x barely affects performance, and FSR upscaling does not add performance. The developer also notes the PS5's Zen 2 cores are slower per core than a fast PC, which hurts CPU-heavy games.
The developer's own testing table marks Halo 2 as good, at 30 FPS stock or roughly 36 to 60 FPS with the Halo 2 60 FPS patch depending on the scene, and Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex as running smoothly. Forza Motorsport manages only 15 to 21 FPS while racing despite hitting its 30 FPS cap in menus, and Fable: The Lost Chapters runs at 10 to 30 FPS depending on the area. The same modding community is moving quickly: on X, users BrinoTk and Mihawk9_9, the latter being the person behind PS5_Vulkan, announced Xbox 360 and PS5 Proton projects on the same day, with the Xbox 360 emulator already available for testing.
