THE CRUNCH
Tribes of Midgard developer Norsfell has announced Aftergods, a top-down action RPG the studio describes as a "survivalite", set in an open world recovering from Ragnarok. It is planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, with no release date announced.
Rather than sticking with Norse mythology, the game spans Greek, Egyptian and Norse landmasses, with room for yet-undiscovered pantheons. Players take the role of the Godborn, children of the gods who survived Ragnarok, and must restore the shattered Seeds of the World Tree to rebalance a collapsed cosmos.
The hook is divinity as a resource: a scarce supply of Nectar keeps your character in god form, and running out at the wrong moment reverts them to a vulnerable mortal state. Other features include rescuing survivors to build a pantheon whose followers automate base building and crafting, shapeshifting into mythical beasts such as phoenixes and manticores to traverse the world, and full offline single-player support alongside online co-op. Norsfell says the game is built with native controller support and optimised for handhelds like the Steam Deck.
Studio creative director Julian Maroda called Aftergods the team's most ambitious project to date, building on Tribes of Midgard, which Norsfell says sold five million units. The reveal trailer includes an animated sequence from Powerhouse Animation Studios with a score recorded by the 60-piece Budapest Scoring Orchestra.
