THE CRUNCH

Stronghold 4 launches on PC via Steam on December 7, developer Firefly Studios has announced, and an updated demo is available now. The medieval real-time strategy and city builder marks the series' first entry built on Unreal Engine 5, which the studio says expands the simulation of castle life, realism and atmosphere.

The December 7 release is an Early Access launch. It includes a 22-mission story campaign, a full Skirmish Trail, Free Build and Custom Skirmish against eight CPU opponents. Online multiplayer, an economic campaign and a co-op trail are planned for later.

The game is a prequel set well before the original Stronghold, returning to the series' medieval England roots. Players follow Penryn, a shepherd whose life is upended, with voice performances from Ben Starr, Samantha Beart, Walles Hamonde and Harry McEntire.

Firefly highlights weather with mechanical effects, such as snow hindering crop growth and heavy rain reducing archery range, alongside larger-than-ever maps and quality of life additions aimed at blending classic strategy with modern expectations.
