THE CRUNCH

Details of a supposed Xbox Elite Series 3 controller have surfaced through the backend of Xbox Design Lab, and they suggest Microsoft is preparing meaningful upgrades. The records reportedly let players pick between Hall effect and TMR thumbsticks, two magnetic sensing technologies designed to eliminate stick drift, alongside upgraded haptics and a dedicated audio scroll wheel. Nothing is confirmed: the findings come from a Reddit user's trawl through configuration data, not an announcement.

The findings come from Reddit user esketitethan, who reportedly spotted configuration records and 3D component models in the backend of Spectrum Customizer, the service behind Microsoft's Xbox Design Lab customisation store. Digital Foundry highlighted the discovery. The controller carries the codename Edessa, and the range of options suggests a new Elite generation rather than add-ons for the existing design.

The stick choices are aimed at stick drift, the common fault where a controller registers movement nobody made. Hall effect and TMR (tunnel magnetoresistance) sensing both use magnets instead of physical contacts, and the records reportedly list standard, loose and tight Hall effect tensions plus a more sensitive TMR option. Haptics may also improve: a motor option named "Advanced Haptics (VCAs)" pairs the existing Impulse Triggers with voice coil actuators, which can produce varied tactile effects rather than a single rumble.

Other listed options include an audio scroll wheel for adjusting headset volume without diving into menus, metal faceplates, low-friction silent sticks, more paddle designs and standard, cross or "grippy" D-pads. TechPowerUp adds that the records point to four SKUs, including an Elite Complete package with a carrying case, charging dock and extra paddles, and a Base model with just a cable, and that Microsoft and Spectrum have since removed the data from public records.

For context, the original Elite controller arrived for Xbox One in October 2015 with interchangeable paddles, stick tops and D-pads, and the Elite Series 2 followed in November 2019 with USB-C, trigger locks and adjustable stick tension. Design Lab customisation reached the Elite Series 2 in 2022. Microsoft has not confirmed any of the Series 3 details, so treat the lot as unverified until it says otherwise.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Microsoft has not commented on the leak, and the leaked records have been pulled from public view, so official confirmation or a reveal would be the next meaningful development.
